Rekindle the Flame for Valentine's Day

In honor of Valentine’s Day this weekend, Heat & Glo asked me to share some of my best ideas to Rekindle the Flame – both with your fireplace, and your significant other. Naturally, I was flattered, but not surprised; after all, I’m something of an expert in that arena.

So I’m taking over the blog this weekend, and imparting to you, dedicated readers, my top tips for bringing back the love in time for this most important holiday:

  • Dinner + a movie: This might sound rote and boring, but hear me out. It’s called a classic for a reason, right? In addition to being the gold standard of dating, it’s also a great way to create a sense of nostalgia – for young love, a long-ago first date, or even for years gone by when a movie ticket was just $2 instead of $10 – and nostalgia almost always equals romance. (Rekindle, indeed.)
  • Bring back the love note: In our digital era, it’s easy to forget the power of the written word – which makes it all that much more romantic. Though it requires the use of that oft-overlooked tool, the pen, I suggest employing a few good old-fashioned notes to show that special someone you care. Jot a sweet thought down and tuck it in his or her wallet; if you’re feeling daring, craft a poem. Even if you only have time for a store-bought card, take an extra moment and share a heartfelt sentiment. (Trust me, it makes the $4.99 you spent on that card much more meaningful when there’s something inside it besides just your signature.)
  • Snuggle up, fireside: This seems obvious, right? Especially with a gas fireplace insert, it’s incredibly easy to create that romantic ambiance with just the flip of a switch. Grab a glass of wine, your favorite guy or gal, and settle in for a warm, relaxing evening. (Of course, there’s no better way to end an evening than in front of the fire, so you should probably add it to the agenda after you get back from the movie theater – and it also makes a great venue for an oral rendition of that poem you wrote.)

The best part about these gems? They work anytime, not just on Valentine’s Day. (You’re welcome.) Have a few tips of your own? Head over to Facebook and share them – after all, you can never have too many ideas for keeping the romance alive.
