For historic homes, a gas insert similar to the Escape Gas Fireplace Insert shown here, is a great way to upgrade your interior without compromising the defining façade of the property.

The Challenge
Modernize an outdated living room and update the fireplace, the first phase of an interior restoration.

The Project

When interior designer, realtor, and home-renovator Katie Kurtz, with Adorned Homes, saw the picturesque property in North Oaks, Minnesota she quickly saw the inherit potential. “The bones of the property were amazing, with the two-story ceiling and the fireplace with high windows on each side as a focal point,” she noted.

Katie’s vision was inspired by Restoration Hardware showrooms in Chicago, think “Old-World mixed with modern, luxurious furnishings and décor.” She first added beams to create a more intimate atmosphere while maintaining the majestic proportions of the steep ceilings.

Upgrading the fireplace was paramount, so she energized the space by replacing the old wood-burning fireplace with a Heat & Glo Escape I-35 FireBrick gas fireplace insert.

"A gas insert gives so much more ease of use,” Katie said. “I love the option to have the flame on or just the glowing ember lights for the ambiance you want, winter or summer. I wanted to create a space that is unique and beautiful in its own way but will also appeal to different people for future resale."

The retrofit product used the home’s existing gas line connection and chimney to accommodate fuel and venting respectively.
