Trend Watch: Wood Storage & Gas Fireplaces

Certain pairings in design are inherently satisfying: all-white kitchens, bay windows and coastal homes, Scandinavian touches and industrial loft style, fireplaces and firewood. And while we can all agree that a stack of firewood instantly adds warmth and texture to a room with a fireplace, pairing firewood with a gas fireplace may not be as obvious a choice, but that is changing.

Since gas fireplaces don’t require the addition of firewood to keep them burning (also known as a big part of their universal appeal—more on that here!), that’s not stopping creative homeowners and interior designers from including firewood storage in rooms where a gas fireplace is the focal point. Wondering whether this trend is for you? Read on for inspiration on how to put this trend to work in your space.

Connect to nature

Minimalist and modern interiors can run the risk of feeling cold, even with a fireplace feature. But natural elements in a room rarely feel intrusive, as evidenced by this beautiful stack of wood underneath our MEZZO See-Through. It’s also proof that keeping things minimal can still make a huge visual impact, which is sure to please the Konmari followers among us.

Add authenticity

Direct-vent gas fireplaces and fireplace inserts are efficient, clean and effective at throwing heat, but there’s something intrinsically satisfying about combining natural elements with man-made ones. Utah interior design team Studio McGee did a gorgeous job of anchoring this main floor master suite with open shelving stocked with logs paired with a modern linear gas fireplace. The softly washed wooden shiplap wall complements the natural wood storage, lending continuity to the overall look—a key trick for making this trend work.

Use all your space efficiently

Nooks and crannies cry out for decoration and enhancement, but they can become clutter-catchers if you’re not careful. Use insets in a wall and cut wood to fill the dimension, as illustrated in this artisan custom home designed by Refined LLC featuring our SlimLine series gas fireplace.

Combine elements to create harmony

Brick, wood, metal and textiles: A mix of materials makes for an easy-living bohemian atmosphere that’s anything but stuffy. Borrow elements from all your favorite styles for your own take on eclectic. Mixed art pieces, firewood, an Eames-style lounger, a linear gas fireplace with driftwood logs and fur make for a reading nook that’s both cozy and unique.
