The challenge: Create a home for a growing family that offered modern functional spaces with amazing views overlooking a historic park.
Project overview: The Hendricks Park home was designed to have a light and airy interior, with ample space to entertain and allow the clients’ children to play, while also offering areas for solitude and reflection. The property itself sat on a hillside directly next to a local historic park and running trails near the University of Oregon, necessitating a design that took full advantage of the scenery. However, the sloped site offered some unique challenges for the goals of the homeowners, including integrating the indoor and outdoor spaces.
Living spaces and bedrooms were designed to face out to fully soak in the views and sunshine, while still maintaining a level of privacy for the occupants. “It definitely had a lighter, brighter feel than other designs I’ve done,” explains Iverson, principal at Jordan Iverson Signature Homes. The home’s blended-function great room had zones for dining, cooking and living—perfect for a busy family.
With views top of mind, Iverson sought a linear fireplace that would complement the vaulted ceilings and expansive windows while still being proportional to the space. “This is the first design where I incorporated windows fully surrounding a fireplace,” Iverson notes. He chose a Mezzo direct-vent gas fireplace to add coziness and achieve the industrial modern aesthetics for which he is known.
For the fireplace surround, Jordan used reclaimed wood and blackened steel to create the room’s centerpiece. “The Mezzo’s clean look tied cohesively into the overall design of the wall,” he says.
The fireplace surround wasn’t the only wall where expansive windows augment the views. The harmony between inside and out was further enhanced by the fire station-style steel and glass garage doors in the dining room, which open out onto a large, two-story deck.
Other showstopping details include custom shelves with a scaffold ladder and a bathroom featuring a custom mosaic tile backsplash that took days to create.
